Your refrigerator’s evaporator coil functions to absorb heat inside the appliance, while the condenser coil directs that heat away from the fridge. But, when those coils accumulate dust, dirt, and grime over time, the appliance’s compressor must work harder than usual to keep the fridge at a suitable temperature.

Unfortunately, if the compressor must work extra hard for too long, it can fail prematurely, and your fridge’s temperature can skyrocket—fast. Not surprisingly, the only way to remedy a burned-out compressor is by calling a refrigerator repair technician who can replace the apparatus.

Fortunately, you have the power to avoid compressor burnout simply by performing routine coil cleaning. Here’s how to do it:

●        Pull your refrigerator away from the wall and unplug it from the power source.

●        Locate the coils, either on the back or bottom surface of the appliance. If there’s a grate over the coils, you’ll need to remove it to clean the coils properly.

●        Examine the coils for dust and grime accumulation.

●        Scrub the interior of the seal, as well as around the sides, to remove all traces of food particles, mold, and mildew.

●        Grab a soft, lint-free cloth or sponge and douse it in clean, warm water from your tap.

●        Thoroughly wipe down the interior and sides of the door seal to remove the grime you just loosened.

●        Grab a clean, dry cloth and dry the seal completely before plugging the appliance in and adjusting the temperature setting to the appropriate level.

Keep the Drip Pan Clean

What in the world is a drip pan, and why on earth do you need to clean it? Your refrigerator’s drip pan is positioned to catch liquid that runs through the appliance’s drainage system as a result of its automatic defrost function. Since we no longer defrost our fridges manually, they come equipped with a small, timer-operated heater that routinely melts frost accumulation within the freezer. 

When properly maintained, the drainage system will operate without a hitch. If you fail to clean the drip pan twice per year, however, the drainage hole can become clogged with debris that accumulates in the pan. Plus, bacteria love a moist, warm environment, so, to cut down on weird smells, drip pan cleaning is essential.

Why Does My Washer Smell So Bad?

For health reasons, it’s critical that you remedy the situation as soon as you detect an off-putting odor. If you allow it to persist, bacteria and mildew can transfer to your clothing and linens during a typical wash cycle, which can trigger irritating skin rashes or other allergies. Here are a few simple fixes that should have your washer smelling fresh and clean in no time:

●        Mix ¼ cup baking soda with ¼ cup water and add this solution to your washer’s detergent compartment. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the washing machine’s drum. Run a normal wash cycle using the hottest water setting available. Do not add linens to the machine for this cycle.

●        If you have a front-load washer, biofilm can begin to grow around the door seal when the interior of the machine contains small amounts of moisture after a wash cycle. To get rid of existing buildup, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar, spray around the door seal, and scrub away any film you can see.

To prevent future film buildup, keep the gasket seal as dry as possible between loads. You can either leave the door cracked open until the unit is completely dry, or use a towel to gently dry the interior of the door after each wash cycle.

●        Refrigerator That Won’t Stay Cold

No matter the issue, a common thread runs through: homeowners don’t realize they’re misusing their machines, and ultimately, that’s what ends up causing the damage. Are you making the same mistake? Using Too Much Detergent

If soap cleans things, naturally, you should use more of it if you want sparkling clean dishes, right? Wrong. No one thinks they use too much soap, but unless you’re diligently measuring your detergent according to your machine or package instructions, chances are you’re overdoing it. And, unfortunately, using too much soap is a cardinal sin of dishwasher ownership.

If you have a high-efficiency dishwasher, using too much detergent can impede the machine’s ability to clean your dishes properly. Because HE machines are designed to use far less water than their older counterparts, they cannot efficiently rinse away excessive detergent, especially when that detergent is ultra concentrated. Soap residue builds inside the filter, and your dishes don’t get nearly as clean as they would with far less detergent.

Before you call a dishwasher repairman with complaints that your dishes just don’t get clean anymore, try going against your instinct and add a smaller quantity of detergent to your next load. You may be pleasantly surprised at the results!

Leaving Food Waste

True, your dishwasher is designed to clean dishes; however, it’s not designed to handle substantial quantities of food waste. When you leave excessive food on your dishes and run them through a load, that food can gum up the machine’s internal working components and slow down the wash cycle.

While you don’t need to rinse every dirty dish before loading up your dishwasher, you should always scrape leftover food into the trash before placing dishes in the machine. Getting into this habit will help keep your dishwasher’s filter clean and lessen its chance of malfunction. If you’ve noticed your dishwasher running slower than usual, try cleaning the filter and clearing food waste from your dishes before running your next load.

Before you call an appliance repair company, it’s always a good idea to determine if the issue is due to operator error rather than a mechanical problem with the unit.

Running Sparse Loads

Running a cycle with just a few dishes isn’t just wasteful; it can shorten the life of your machine. Your dishwasher is designed to run most efficiently when it’s filled properly, so running the machine with fewer dishes isn’t likely to get them any cleaner. Moreover, when you run your dishwasher with very few dishes, the likelihood of water pressure dislodging items from the racks is higher. Overloading the Racks

While failing to load your dishwasher completely can shorten its life, nothing will hamper its performance faster than overloading the dish racks. When you load too many dishes in the machine, you increase its chance of overheating. Most dishwashers have mechanisms in place to prevent such an occurrence, but they’re designed to operate most efficiently when the machine contains an appropriate load. Fill your dishwasher according to your manual’s instructions to avoid overloading, and to ensure your dishes get sparkling clean.

Not Cleaning the Interior

Your dishwasher might do a fantastic job cleaning dishes, but it needs cleaning every now and then, too. If you never clean the interior of the machine, your dishwasher has likely developed substantial food waste accumulation, grease buildup, hard water scaling (if you have hard water), and soap scum residue. If you allow the accumulation to continue, your machine’s efficiency will slowly decrease, and you’ll be calling a dishwasher repair service before you know it.

Ideally, you should clean the interior of your machine once per month for optimal performance. For thorough cleaning, try running your dishwasher sans dishes with white vinegar instead of dishwasher detergent. The acidity of the vinegar will strip away all forms of buildup within the machine without damaging the internal components.

Failing to Clean the Filter

Did you know your dishwasher has a filter? If not, you might be inadvertently damaging your machine! The filter functions to trap food particles suspended in the water during the wash cycle, so if you’re not cleaning it regularly, waste accumulation may be compromising your appliance’s efficiency. Before you go scrounging around trying to locate the filter, though, take a look at your dishwasher’s manual to determine if you have a self-cleaning or manual filter.

If you have a manual filter, here’s how to clean it:

●        Locate the filter beneath your dishwasher’s rotating arm. You’ll need to remove the bottom dish rack to reach it.

●        Depending on your model, your dishwasher may feature a filter with multiple components. If you have an upper and lower filter, twist and lift the upper cylindrical filter to remove it, and then lift the lower filter out of the machine.

●        Scrape all food particles from the filters into the trash and wash the filters using warm, soapy water and a soft toothbrush, if necessary.

●        Examine the filter housing for stray food particles and remove them, if necessary.

●        Reinsert the lower filter into the housing and lock the cylindrical filter securely back in place.

If you have a manual filter, we recommend cleaning it once per month for optimal dishwasher performance.

Leaving the Door Open

Don’t let your dishwasher door hang open! You might think it’s obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many damaged and broken dishwasher doors we see. Children and pets have an affinity for open dishwasher doors that often proves difficult to tackle. Plus, leaving a dishwasher door open creates a trip hazard, which means you might be the one who ultimately damages the door.

For the best protection against accidental damage, don’t leave your dishwasher door open unless you’re actively loading dishes. And, if you have children, educate them on the importance of differentiating between expensive appliances they shouldn’t play with and their own toys.

The Burners Don’t Heat Up

If your burners don’t heat up when activated, your range is likely suffering one of the following issues:

●        Failed or damaged burner connection

●        Failed burner

●        Bad infinite control switch

First things first, if you only have one faulty burner, try switching that burner with another coil from a different burner. If the burner operates properly after you’ve switched it out, you have a faulty burner, which is easy to replace. If, however, the burner fails to operate even after you’ve swapped it out, the burner’s socket may be damaged. Inspect the socket for signs of damage and replace it, if necessary. If all else fails, the infinite control switch is the last thing you should test. You’ll require a multimeter for this task, so if you don’t have one, you’ll need to contact a range repair company to test the unit for you.

Burner Temperature Doesn’t Adjust

If your range’s burners don’t adjust when you alter their temperature settings, the unit may have a continuity problem with its surface element switch wiring. This issue is not easy to diagnose, and unless you have significant electrical knowledge, it’s best left to the professionals. Contact a range repair specialist who can perform the necessary testing on the wiring’s contacts and terminals.

Inaccurate Oven Temperature

Does your oven turn on but fail to heat to the correct temperature? If you suspect your oven is generating a temperature other than the one you set,

●        Temperature control thermostat. The thermostat controls the voltage to the heating element while the oven is on. After preheating, if your oven varies more than 40°F from the temperature you set, there’s a high chance the thermostat requires recalibration, or it’s defective and must be replaced.

●        Temperature sensor. If your oven doesn’t have a thermostat, it has a temperature sensor that monitors and adjusts voltage during operation. If the sensor is faulty, it may be cutting off voltage to the heating element prematurely, which will cause the temperature variance. If you have a multimeter, measure the sensor’s electrical resistance while it’s at room temperature to determine if it has adequate electrical flow. If not, you’ll need a range repairman to replace the sensor.

●        Thermostat sensor bulb. The thermostat sensor bulb senses the temperature of the air inside your oven, which allows the oven thermostat to adjust the on/off cycling of the heating elements. If the bulb shifts from its normal placement, it may sense the temperature of the surrounding metal rather than the air. Examine the bulb to determine if its mounting clips have loosened, and tighten them if necessary.

Oven Doesn’t Heat

If your oven refuses to heat up when you turn it on, in most cases, the malfunction is due to an electrical problem within the unit. Another common issue homeowners frequently overlook is a deactivated breaker switch in the electrical panel. Issues to look for include:

●        Clock malfunction. If you’ve set your range to automatically time cooking, its clock must be fully functional for the automatic feature to operate. Inside the oven, the clock typically has a timer unit featuring electrical contacts that switch the power on at the desired time. Sometimes, the clock may revert to auto after an oven cleaning, so try resetting the clock before calling an appliance repair technician.

●        Electronic Control Malfunction. The majority of new ranges feature an internal electronic control system that regulates oven operation. If you suspect this is the issue, you’ll need to contact a range repair specialist to remove the oven’s panel and diagnose the problem.
